Elementary teachers and education consultants Boushey and Moser outline a research-based method for integrating assessment into daily reading and classroom discussion called the CAFE system, which aims for the goals of Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanded vocabulary. They describe how the teacher keeps an assessment notebook, holds student conferences, plans small-group instruction based on clusters of students with similar needs, and uses whole-group instruction based on the needs of many children.
